Conference of the Institute of Ismaili Studies in London: “Devotion to the Prophet’s Family in Islamic Thought and Practice”

In May, Dr Akif Tahiiev took part in the conference “Devotion to the Prophet’s Family in Islamic Thought and Practice” that was hosted by the Institute of Ismaili Studies in London.

In his presentation “#AhlulBayt: Narratives of Devotion to the Prophet’s Family on Instagram”, Tahiiev discussed how users on Instagram combine personal and public piety under the hashtag #AhlulBayt by posting images, videos and texts in veneration of the Prophet’s family, thereby creating identity through devotional narratives – sometimes even crossing denominational borders. Tahiiev attached particular importance here to Shii holidays and days of mourning, on which posts often highlight the Shii identity of users.
