Akademie für Islam in Wissenschaft und Gesellschaft (AIWG)
aiwg.deThe Academy for Islam in Research and Society (AIWG) at the Goethe University in Frankfurt conducts interdisciplinary research and knowledge transfer activities, focusing on Islamic religion and Muslim life in Germany and Europe. It serves as a hub for all eleven faculties and institutes for Islamic theological studies and Islamic religious pedagogy situated at German universities and other higher institutions of education. The Academy tackles issues of social participation by integrating religious perspectives. Founded in 2017, the AIWG has been continuously funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research
The Center for Islamic Studies (ZEFIS) is a joint institution of Goethe University Frankfurt and Justus Liebig University Giessen. It connects the units of the two universities involved in the field of Islamic Studies and Teaching Islamic Religion, coordinates joint activities and projects and creates synergies between the study programs. Furthermore, the ZEFIS sees itself as an information platform for the public in Hessen and Germany interested in Islamic issues.
Theofunk
theofunk.deTheofunk is a multimedia initiative by the Institute for the Study of Culture and Religion of Islam at Goethe University Frankfurt am Main. Since 2019, it has been utilizing podcasts and videos to amplify voices from academia, the arts, and practical fields, contributing to social discussions about Islam. Theofunk envisions itself as a platform for thoughtful dialogue on Islam-related topics, moving beyond typical polemical frameworks.

Through research and teaching led by four professorships—Quran and Quranic Exegesis, Islamic Norms: Law and Ethics, Intellectual History of Islam, and Culture and Society of Islam in Past and Present—in a highly interdisciplinary environment, it builds bridges and examines connections, transfer potentials, and opportunities for interaction between Islam’s traditional fields of knowledge, the various methodological and theoretical approaches of modern sciences, and the complex structures of global knowledge.
