Call for Papers: International Conference “God, Human, Machine: Images and Imaginations of Religion in the Age of AI”

This conference, convened at the University of Erfurt by Prof. Christoph Günther and Dr. Fouad Gehad Marei invites scholars to explore how AI technologies are reshaping religious images and imaginations across traditions, cultures, and social contexts. We welcome theoretical and empirical contributions at the intersections of Religious Studies, Anthropology, Art History, and Science and Technology Studies.

Recent research shows that AI and Large Language Models are transforming how religion is represented and practiced, and may even contribute to new forms of re-enchantment. This conference focuses on the aesthetic, ethical, and intellectual implications of AI-generated imagery in religious contexts.

We seek papers that examine how AI and computer-generated imagery both shape and are shaped by religious imaginations, make the unseen tangible, and influence religious knowledge, practice, and meaning-making. Contributions may address the use, interpretation, and critical debates surrounding these technologies by scholars, creators, and practitioners across all religious traditions.
