Dr. Akif Tahiiev at the symposium “Digital Methodologies for the Study of Religion”
Dr Akif Tahiiev spoke about ethical dilemmas in the study of digital religious minorities at the symposium “Digital Methodologies for the Study of Religion”, organised by the “Digital British Islam” project at Coventry University.
In his paper, he examines ethical engagement strategies within digital research, drawing on case studies and theoretical debates to assess current methodologies and their limitations. Digital spaces are vital for marginalized religious minorities to express identity and build community, but researching these communities raises ethical challenges related to visibility and vulnerability. Scholars must balance the risks of exposing communities to harm with the need to avoid epistemic erasure through anonymization.
